Was it yesterday
or the day before that you promised yourself you would do something?
They say “The road to heaven is paved with good intentions”.
I know that when I look back over my life, I can see many different events,
which prevented me from doing the things I had wanted to do. Now, years
later, I wonder what might have happened had I put my foot down and taken
action. Perhaps I would be a millionaire or a famous person. Of course,
we cannot undo the past, but we can be fully present in the “here
and now” and make a pact with ourselves to follow through.
Naturally, that sounds like an easy promise to make, but unfortunately,
we all have a history of mindsets that prevent us from making changes.
In our desperation to keep that history going, we look inward for excuses,
rationalizations, explanations, even fantasies that will validate our
ideas and excuse us to not change our habits. So, why is it that we hold
on to habits that harm us and prevent us from being successful in all
our endeavors?
It is a fear of dealing with the unknown. Those strange people or things
that may test us, or stretch us to go beyond our limits are a challenge
that is often encountered with dread or even worse, panic and paranoia.
Thoughts like “I don’t trust those people!” or “It
won’t work, even if I do try,” instill a tremendous amount
of caution that prevents an opportunity from developing and possibly
blooming into a wonderful security. It seems safer to dream and pretend
that things will change as soon as the chance to relax happens. Unfortunately,
that chance never seems to happen. Then the years pass by and the old
habits become safe ground despite any discomfort, sadness, depression
etc. There is a constant self nagging statement that runs through the
mind “If
only I’d taken a chance…”
Now, today there is time to make those changes - to believe in your dreams
and make them a reality. Sit down and write out the form of your dream
and the steps you need to take to make it all happen. Then reach out
to those people you feared, after all they are human, and ask, and receive
and enjoy the process of growth and changes that will follow as you put
you plans into actions. Stand out in the crowd and be proud. Trust that
all you do is an example for others to follow. In time you will lead
your family, business acquaintances and friends into a change in their
thinking too.
Believe that you can “Have your cake and eat it.” Develop
your skills and talents and use them. Share your knowledge and wisdom
with others and receive information that will help you overcome your
problems. Knock on all the doors in town if you have to. Someone out
there is waiting for you and together you can make your worlds sing.
